SPAN 3360 Introduction to Community Interpreting in Spanish. This course enables students to improve their oral and writing proficiency in Spanish, particularly as related to the grammatical structures and specialized terminology used in professional settings, including healthcare, mental healthcare, social work, and law and law enforcement. Students will be introduced to colloquial and formal dialectal variations in the Spanish-speaking world, some common traditional medical beliefs and practices of the US Latino population, and the most significant differences between the U.S. healthcare and judicial systems and those in some major Spanish-speaking countries. The class will also cover issues related to interpretation, including the ethical, legal, and personal self-care responsibilities of professional interpreters; standard interpreting protocols; and the minimum qualifications and procedures needed to become a fully certified medical and/or judicial interpreter. Students will practice interpreting in all three main modes of interpretation (consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation).
